Terms of use
Last updated 1 October 2026
These are the terms you agree to when you use With a Local. We have tried to write them in plain English. Where something matters, we have said it plainly rather than burying it.
What With a Local is
We introduce travellers to Locals who share their interests and would enjoy spending a little time with them. That is all we do. We are an introduction service, not a tour operator, not a travel agent and not an employer.
Our Locals are volunteers. They are never paid for their time, by us or by you. They are people who live somewhere and are happy to meet someone visiting it.
We are not a dating service, and asking to meet somebody on that basis is not what this is for.
Who can use it
- You must be 18 or over.
- You must give us information that is true. Your first name, your age range and your photo should be yours.
- One account per person.
Becoming a Local
Every application is read by a person and followed by a short video call, where we check that the person on the call is the person on the card. We may decline an application, and we do not have to give a reason. We may also pause or remove a Local at any time.
Meeting someone
- Every meeting is agreed by both of you. Nobody is obliged to meet anybody, and saying no needs no explanation.
- You arrange the details between you. We do not choose where you go or what you do.
- Photos are shared once a meeting is agreed, so that you can recognise each other.
- Use your own judgement, as you would meeting anyone new. Meet somewhere public, tell someone where you are going, and leave if you are uncomfortable.
The admin fee
- Travellers pay a one-off admin fee of €10 for each confirmed match.
- Nothing is charged when you ask, and nothing is charged when a Local says yes. Your card is saved when the meeting is confirmed and charged after you have met.
- Either of you can tell us you met. The first to do so is what triggers the fee. If neither of you tells us, nothing is charged.
- If a meeting does not happen, say so and nothing is charged. If you are charged for a meeting that did not take place, tell us and we will put it right.
- The fee is for making the introduction, not for the Local’s time. TO CONFIRM: refund position and whether EU consumer withdrawal rights apply to this fee.
Costs on the day
When you meet, the traveller is expected to cover the Local’s reasonable costs, such as a coffee, a meal, an entry ticket or an activity fee. It is a way of thanking someone for giving their time. It is not a payment for their time, and it is between the two of you rather than something we collect or enforce.
What is expected of everyone
- Turn up when you say you will, or say as soon as you know you cannot.
- Be courteous. Nobody owes you their time.
- No harassment, no discrimination, and nothing that makes the other person uncomfortable.
- Do not use With a Local to sell anything, to recruit, or to promote a business.
- Do not share anybody’s photo, contact details or messages outside With a Local.
We may suspend or close an account that does not keep to this, and we do not have to give notice.
Reviews
Once you have told us you met, you can leave the other person a review. Write what you honestly found. You may also give a Super Star, which is one mark for a time that was genuinely outstanding rather than a score: most meetings have none and that is no criticism.
Reviews go both ways and both are shown. They carry your first name, they cannot be changed once written, and we may remove one that is abusive, untrue or not about the meeting.
A review can also carry two private notes, which are never public. One is for the other person alone, and one is for us alone. Use the second to tell us anything that went wrong, or anything you would rather we knew than said to them.
What we are responsible for, and what we are not
We make introductions and we verify our Locals as described above. We do not supervise meetings, we are not present at them, and we cannot control how anybody behaves.
TO CONFIRM with the lawyer, and the most important part of this document: the limits of our liability for anything that happens at or because of a meeting, what we say about insurance, and whether anything here can be worded differently without misleading anybody.
Closing your account
You can close your account whenever you like, from your account page. If you have a meeting already agreed, it closes on the last day of that trip instead, so the meeting can still happen and the person expecting you is told.
Changes to these terms
If we change them we will update the date at the top, and tell you if the change matters.
Law
TO CONFIRM: governing law and courts. French law is the obvious candidate given the first city, but it depends on where the company is registered.
