What costs does the traveller cover?

There is one payment to With a Local: a one-off €10 admin fee, paid by the traveller when a match is confirmed. It covers running the service. Locals pay nothing, and receive none of it.

Locals volunteer their time and are never paid to meet travellers. As a simple way of thanking them for their time and company, travellers are expected to cover reasonable costs that allow the local to join them, such as a coffee, a meal, an entry ticket or an activity fee.

This isn’t about running up a bill. If you meet for a drink, for example, covering your Local’s drink is a nice way to say thank you. Any extras or additional purchases are paid for by the person who chooses them.

And if you’ve had a particularly good time together, you’re welcome to be a little more generous. Buy another round, pick up lunch or cover something you’ve enjoyed together. It’s entirely up to you. Think of it as a gesture of appreciation for someone who chose to share their time with you, not a payment for their time.
